One recent post showed a photo of President Obama tying a bow tie; another discussed the intense fascination with his physical person that seems to have gripped so many people. That led some of us to compare our favorite pictures of Mr O.
The iconic image of Mr O so far is probably Shepard Fairey‘s “Hope” poster. In October, Fairey himself contacted boingboing.net with a link to a collection of spoofs of his poster. A few I can’t resist copying appear after the jump.

/ February 5, 2009Yeah, I saw that. I’m all for giving credit where credit is due, but it’s an AP photo- they should just let it go! They’re making themselves look bad. It would be a different story if Fairey’s springboard had been a photo by an unrepresented photographer.

/ February 5, 2009What’s more, the original painting doesn’t look that much like the photo- Fairey changed the perspective, turning Obama several degrees to the viewer’s left, and lowered Obama’s chin noticeably. And the poster version is based on a photo the Obama campaign gave Fairey, so the AP doesn’t have any claim on that one at all. I’d be inclined to call the lawsuit a publicity stunt if it weren’t coming from the world’s chief conduit for publicity.
